School From Home Session 10 Friday March 27th

Hello everyone!

No late start for me today.  For some reason I was awake at 5 am.  I couldn't go back to sleep so I thought... Go ride your bike.  So I got some gear on and braced for cold winds of the morning.

Quick side story:  Starting in 2011, I began what is known as a BGBY  (Big Green Bird Year).  For several years I would challenge myself to identify as many species of birds in one year.  The trick is, the bird only counts IF you are on foot, bike or boat with no use or aid of fuel source.  You can't drive to a park, walk around, see a bunch of birds drive home and then it counts.  Nope.  Wherever you live is your starting point and you must return the same way without the use of fossil fuels or alternative energy source.  You have to rely on sheer physical effort.  You can count birds while sitting on your patio, walking in your neighborhood or riding a bike.

My best effort was back in 2013, I recorded 157 species of birds.  Oh, I am not the only nut out there doing this.  There are not many other crazies like me but there are some.
Listed below are some of the bird/bike nuts like me!

214 – Nathan DeBruine
190 – Ed Lewandowski

227 – Matt Hysell ‘08
219 – Andrew Dettling ‘12

211 – Andrew Dettling ‘14

157- Ed Lewandowski '13

To tell you that this can be an obsession is an understatement!  Andy Dettling saw 264 birds on his bike in one year!  That is insane!  The most birds I saw in one year was last year with 270 and I DROVE all over the lovely state of Michigan to do it.
What he accomplished that year is simply amazing!  You would not believe what lengths he took to do it!

The reason for this topic this morning loops back to the "unicorn power" sign off you may have watched on yesterday's blog video.  A unicorn is a make believe horse with a singular horn that sticks out of its head basically?! They do signify something rare or unique.  A one of a kind species that stands out on its own.  My girls and I have embraced the unicorn as being an original.  Be one of a kind.  Live your life by your own measure.  The smiling unicorn picture you will find on the shelf of our classroom reminds me to be happy and strive for the impossible.  With this mantra, you will set yourself apart as the "unicorn" of the world around you.

This morning was another opportunity to get out and ride my bike looking for birds when I otherwise would have been meeting you at the door with a multiplication fact to have mastered.
I rode about 6-8 miles enjoying the cool air and recent rush of the sights and sounds of wildlife coming into our area of the world.

On my way, I found a Fox Sparrow.  A FOY (First Of the Year) bird!  The Fox Sparrow is a larger bird in the sparrow family of birds and well named for its Fox like color.  The bird will stand out in the crowd with its beautiful reddish-brown color and amazing songs and warbles.

The Fox

You might be think, Ok, Lew, you are talking about weird people that ride bikes all over to find birds, count them over the year, unicorn power and some fox bird?  Where are you going with all this?!

I am trying to encourage you to seek out unique and interesting things in your day while you have the chance to.
Make something with paper, read a new book, build a puzzle, try to do 39 push ups in one minute, create some unicorn art, clean out the basement, help make dinner, fix a toilet, tell your family 5 things you are thankful for, do something, anything!  Go find adventure in your day today!
That is my message to you this morning and the Something To Ponder About #1.

Here are some suggested places for you on and adventure that are not too far from home:
1) Waterford Oaks County Park- Just south of Dixie Hwy on Scott Lake Road.  Not too far from the Old Summit Place Mall
Take shoes you don't mind getting wet or muddy.

2) Hawk Woods Nature Preserve- Off of Exit 81 across from the Palace.  Take 24 south to the turnaround and follow the the signs to the nature preserve on Shimmons Rd. that turns into Bald Mountain Rd.  This was one of my absolute favorite walks when I lived in Pontiac.  Take shoes you don't mind getting wet or muddy.

3) River Woods Park- Take 59 towards Rochester and Exit on Squirrel Rd. heading south.  Take the first turnaround and you are at the park.  There are paved trails but I still advise going off path but take shoes you don't mind getting wet or muddy in case you do.

4) Clinton River Bike Trail- The best place to start is at the Opdyke Rd. Trailhead.   This nice paved path takes you to downtown Auburn Hills and beyond...

5) West Bloomfield Bike Trail- I suggest parking at Home Depot on Orchard Lake Rd and Telegraph.
This is another nice surface path that takes you all the way to Orchard Lake and beyond...

I used everyone of these spots for my BGBY bird adventures!

Something To Ponder About #2
When things in our routine lives get thrown off like they have, we need to learn to adjust what I hear people call, "your new normal."
I feel like "my new normal" changes each day.  Yesterday I nudged you to think about 5 things you are thankful for.

Today I want to shift your thinking to:  What 5 things stand out to you as the most different things about your life lately?

1) Planning-  On any given day, I know what time I have to be up for work.  I have not been eating at Tim Hortons for two weeks!  That is one of the craziest things about what is different.  So I plan my own coffee and take a bit more effort to enjoy a solid breakfast.  I differently plan to teach in a sweatshirt, baseball hat, not wearing shoes and sit in front of a computer thinking about what to say in a blog instead of in front of a bunch of lovely faces.
I plan my day based on the weather so much more.  I check the weather report to see when I should go outside, workout or what I should do.

2) Facebook-  I have never really been a big Facebook guy but I am using Facebook more than ever these days.  I watch work out videos from our Kickboxing class to keep me motivated, get into great shape and stay that way.  This is very different because I am determined to make it to a class as much as possible but with it closed down, I have to get used to working out online.  I have been connecting with new people from the workout studio about good meals to make, high protein snacks and encouraging each to stay fit.

3) Cats-  We have 3 cats even though I am more of a dog person, we can't handle the allergies of a dog.  The cats know we are home and are being spoiled!  We pet them more often and throughout the day.  On days when I get home from work (Daddy's Cat; Ginger) our oldest cat will follow me around the rest of the night and basically forces me to pet her.  She has to get her fill of petting from me not being around all day.  Now, she just pops in once and awhile to say hi, get a quick pat and head out for the next nap.

4) Clean- I would not normally clean out the basement!  Nobody likes to go down there because when we get busy we get in a bad habit of leaving stuff here, there, anywhere and forget about because we can't see it.  So I am cleaning the basement.  I am also trying my hand at putting tile on our basement stairs for the first time.  Wish me luck.  Lots of math involved for solving area, angles, precise cuts to make the tile fit the space and how much money to budget on the project.  Me putting in tile,  THAT'S DIFFERENT!!!

5) People- My family and I are doing our part to stay home and keep social distance.  This is probably the hardest because I am a pretty talkative person.  People are acting different for sure.  I find that people are less likely to wave or say hello.  I find this to be odd.  Saying hello and waving can't give you illness.  Really, the wave and hello give you a sense of happiness and community which is the best medicine for fighting off stress and things can lead to illness.  Today, on my morning bike ride, a woman walking her dog waved and said hello very enthusiastically!  I found myself smiling and said, "hello and good morning" louder than I normally would.  It stuck with me because the friendliness of a simple hello inspired me to type this and tell you about it. In times like these, it is a blessing to stay positive and happy.  Kids in our neighborhood are doing things like writing nice messages or drawings on the sidewalk in chalk. The girls aunties sent them a package of fun activities to do.  I encourage everyone to do something kind for someone else.  Happiness spreads on to others, so pass it on!

Those are my 5 different things lately?
What are yours?!

Something To Ponder About #3
In this last segment of the day, I want to point out a few things to keep in mind.

1) Today is the last day to turn in work.  The deadline is 3:30 unless I am told otherwise by the school.

2) Anything that you turn in from the blog will not count against you.  Every activity in green writing from the blog are your assignments that can go towards helping your grades.

Your blog responses do not have to be as long as mine are, but just text me your answers and I will give you credit for improving your grades.

Now back to the Something to Ponder #3.
Joining us today is my daughter Makayla

Being reflective:  Makayla has a journal she keeps for goal setting and keeping herself organized from week to week.  On Sunday mornings we usually make brunch and share what our goals are.

It is a good thing to be reflective and look back on things.  What was good, what was not so good.  Look back on things you did do or wanted to do but you couldn't find a way to get to it.  Or even if you had a rough week, it helps you take time to reflect on why it was so rough and now you have a chance to think deeper on it and make a change.

These are the categories you can use each day.  You can keep them to yourself, share with someone or share with the family like we do.

Enjoy!

For the coming week:
I'd Love To:

I'm Looking Forward To:

I Need To:

Fitness Goals:

I'm Grateful For:

I Enjoyed:

I Accomplished:

Silver Linings:

Mindful Moments:

Take some time one day a week and reflect on your week.  Set goals and think about what you want to accomplish.  This is a common trait followed by successful people and now you can use this idea in the future.

Have a great weekend and see you soon!

School From Home Session 9 Thursday March 26th

Hello everyone!

I am starting this blog much later today.  I was very busy on the homefront as much changes when you are actually at home working AND so is EVERYBODY else.  So that certainly mixes up the operations of the goings on at the Lew household.

Anyways... I mentioned in a previous blog, that as of Thursday of this week the work would pretty much stop.  I need time to put grades in and get organized.  Any work that you did from the blog just helps your grade.  For each assignment you turned in and I am able to read and grade, I used it to boost an old assignment or a missing assignment like the work you did.

So with no work coming to you for the next couple of days.  Use the time to get any last minute assignments turned in.  I will stop grading at 3:30 pm tomorrow.  You can text what work you did to me or send through Class Dojo.

Here's what happening today:  I will keep things light and fun in these next couple of blogs for some ideas to consider while you are at home.

Something to ponder about #1)
5 Things you are thankful for...
This idea was inspired by my Kickboxing Class
We can't work out there so they gave us things to do to stay in shape.
I challenge you to the 20 minutes of push ups in 1 minute.
I got up to 38.
Can you beat the old man?!

1) Technology-  I am thankful for someone that at one point had the creative genius to figure out how to move water inside of a house.  I don't know if you realize this but when I was a kid, we went up north to a small cabin in the very remote wilderness.  There was no running water.  You wanted water?  You took a big 5 gallon water bag, took the trail down the hill toward the marsh where the water pump was.  You needed some water left in the bag to pour into the top of the water pump for water to start coming out.  So you hold a WATER ONLY funnel up over the water bag with one hand and pump with the other.  Any water coming out was absolutely ICE COLD!  You needed it to be ice cold too because on a hot summer day you still had to lug that 5 gallon water bag up the hill.  I can tell you at your age, I was scrawny and small so I had to build muscles if I wanted water.

Which leads me to toilets.  Yes my lovely cherubs, I am thankful for a toilet today.  For a few days, we didn't have one.  Somebody, I won't mention names, decided to use said broken toilet.  The house quickly started to smell like, well, sewage!  Fun!
Which leads me back to being thankful for technology.  I am able to communicate in ways that I could not when I was your age.  There were no phones at our cabin.  NONE!  NOTHING!  You wanted to make a call you had to put change into what is known as a pay phone and then call.  That was 10 miles away too.
So with the technology, I was able to use a glorious website we call You Tube.  I watched a guy show me how to fix a toilet.  So I did.  Quick run to Home Depot and $7.00 later, we can flush and water flows in and then out of the household.  Oh yeah, we also had to use what is known as an outhouse up at the cabin too.  These are not like the blue, green or brown (sometimes yellow) port a johns you guys are used to.  These are semi-permanent wooden structures that sit over a hole that YOU dig in the ground and handle your business.  There are almost always spiders and even when it is cold in the winter, you still have to walk down the hill and go sit on a not so warm toilet seat.

Toilet repair at its finest.

So technology has allowed me to fix problems like that and how to continue to teach without being in front of you at school!

2) Warmer weather-  Goes without saying, I am very thankful for this. That means birds are coming!  That means it will be time to open the pool and go swimming!  I saw so many more people out yesterday than I have all week thanks to warmth of the sun and blue skies.

3) Time- I am thankful for time.  I hate to go back to the bathroom scenario again but teachers literally have to time and plan when they will go use the restroom.  You could ask and go 4 times.  I am thankful that I am not stuck in a way that I absolutely must do something.  It is odd to have to really plan for what I want to do, should do and must do.

4) New opportunities-  I am thankful for figuring out new ways of doing things or doing things I don't do.  I am now on my second major puzzle.  I finished a 1,000 piece puzzle with Ella and getting close to finished with a 500 piece puzzle I bought for the girls to do.

I bought hours of entertainment on my new puzzle at the dollar store.

5) Family- I am of course thankful we are all safe and healthy.  We all get along well and pretty much never run out of things to do to keep us from getting, dare I say it... Bored!

What are 5 things you are thankful for lately?

Something to ponder about #2
How much reading are you doing?  My girls are taking full advantage of our class Epic app.  They have been reading about an hour a day outside of their online homework.
I will pick up where we left off with Who is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?  As they say in the biz, "The show must go on!"  So I read from where we left off.

Sit back and enjoy!

Oh Kayla found that on Epic they now have a couple Diary of a Wimpy Kid books on there and wanted me to tell you.

Something to ponder about #3
We done gone paper crazy up in here!  I will let Ella show you.

Have a nice night and see you tomorrow!

School From Home Session 8 Wednesday March 25th

Take a hike!  No, seriously weather is great, go for a hike!
This is Thorrington Lake on the Northeast property line of Stony Creek Metropark.  The lake is LOADED with migrating ducks en route to their breeding grounds in Michigan and Canada.

Today is great day to welcome the changes the weather is bringing.
I saw the first butterfly of the year cutting through our back yard.
New comers include:  Red-Winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Eastern Phoebe, Killdeer and many more.  March is a month that really signifies changes especially in the duck and waterfowl population.  Last year there were as many as 250 Loons out on Stony Lake! In a normal year there could be up to 5-8.

Locally speaking: Beaudette Park (The Mill Dam), Sylvan Lake and Crystal Lake are good places for watching great amounts of ducks this time of year.
As a nature nut, I am pumped for these coming months but I want to certainly appreciate each day as it comes.  Hope you get the chance to get out and explore today.

Spring frogs were going absolutely nuts in this pond on Sunday!

Update:
This blog will be a short one.  I am trying to reach out to all of you today and over the next few days to check up on you and see what I can do to support you.  I need some time to organize and regroup.
Working on video angles, uploading pictures, creating/researching learning materials, helping my kids with their online work and just general office stuff; life gets pretty crazy and very much in need of organization!
Oh the madness of it all!!!

I have been looking at all of this as a time to be very productive, stay busy and adventure into things I wouldn't have done otherwise.  What thought keeps coming back to me is,  'I don't want to look back on this when it is all over and think, I wish I would have..'

From a personal standpoint:
I am doing large puzzles and I find it calms me and balances me.
I am doing a whole heck of a lot of cooking and made chocolate chip cookies from scratch.
I am learning how to blog.
I am learning how to make videos to make learning from home more interesting and fun.
I am taking time to really get in amazing physical fitness shape AND stay in shape!
I am cleaning out the basement so our house has more functional space.
I am absolutely spending more time with the girls.

Most recently:  our school staff met online all at the same time for the first time.  We are still working.  We are working to support you in every way we can think of.
I am taking time to today to process a plethora of new information and ideas.
Before I get ahead of myself in new adventures I want to reach out to you guys/gals and see what is happening in your neck of the woods.
I can roll out a bunch of ideas and go educationally crazy, but like in class, I need to see what works for YOU!  I need to see what works for your neighbor.
So before I do that, I am taking a little time to see where you are all at.

Shout out:
Ms. Brown and all OCAMT staff for doing all you can to make learning a reality in tough times!

Coming Up:
More video feeds to give you learning in a more interesting/helpful way.

Reminder:
All assignments are due Mar 27th.

In the meantime, it is a gorgeous day!
I am taking little breaks to work on the garden.

Need to get my boxes of dirt ready for July greatness!!!

Go get some much needed sunshine y'all!

Have a great day!

School From Home Session 7 Tuesday March 24th

March 24th
Update:
Yesterday I "think" I figured out video creation from home computer where you can see the words NOT backwards.  It is not as easy as you might think, trust me!
So... I will be going back over previous blog content in an effort to give you lessons to help you.
All of the assignments in the blogs are the same as what we would do in class except for the NEW math skills so I took more time to explain that part.  I am focused on a video that goes with the print so you aren't left without an actual teacher or a real lesson.
Therefore, it is time to get up and going!

Shout out:
I see that some of you have been getting back on Exact Path this past week.  That's great!  So today's shout out goes to NB, MB, LJ, NL, DRH, AMR and JW.
AMR has logged the most time on Exact Path since the shut down so great job my friend!

Coming Up:
Today I hope to figure out how to create a lesson for NEED skills

Reminder:
All assignments are due Mar 27th.

Today's Assignments
Math
20 Minutes on Exact Path (Math Learning Path)
Review Mar 16th Do Now

8:00 Mastery Skill

HAVING A STRATEGY WHEN YOU ARE STUCK (NO MORE GUESSING!!!)
1) memory fact (remember a new one each day)

Yesterday's fact was 3 x 8 OR 8 x 3

Today's fact is 4 x 8 OR 8 x 4

Remember if you have 3 x 8 memorized you can highlight that on your chart as something you won't forget and can move on to the next one you aren't so sure about.
If you just want to follow the pace of the blog, that is ok too.
The goal is to build a mastery of these facts so they don't slow you down from higher levels of learning.

I will keep the 8s listed.

Like yesterday:  (go back and see yesterday's video on this)
Make a chart of 8s or 4s until you get to 4 x 8 OR 8 x 4
Number your paper from 1 up to 9
Put a 4 under the 1 and start adding by 4s until you get up to 8
EXAMPLE:
1      2     3     4     5     6     7     8     9
4   +4   +4    +4   +4

4     8     12    16   20.... keep going

OR

Put an 8 under the 1 and start adding by 8s until you get to 4

1      2     3     4     5     6     7     8     9
8   +8   +8    +8   +8

8    16.... keep going

Those of you that are working on memorizing, go ahead and challenge yourself on the website below but choose Times Tables and then choose x 8 and text me your score.

Some of you, congratulations you already have this mastered within 5 seconds or less.  You should refer to the website on the blog and challenged your self to learn something else.

Work on http://www.topmarks.co.uk/ for 10 minutes to get you warmed up.
On this site you want to hit Maths (When I taught in New Zealand they refer to Math as "Maths".  The website ends in "uk" so you can probably guess that the folks from the United Kingdom say it too).
Go to Hit The Button:  Those of you seeking a challenge, try halves from 50 to 100 since we are in the fraction world in our NEED skills.
Text me your score on it when you are done.

8:15 Exact Path Math  (20 minutes)
Log on to your learning path.  My 3 recent students use Moby Max Math.  Your time will still count for you.

8:45 Math Do Now Review (text me the work when you are done)
The March 16th Do Now is on Session 1 of the Blog.  You can go under the picture of my daughter feeding the birds to find old blog content and resources.

Review:  I am going to skip #1, #2 and #3 since those are very basic review.
However if you have a question on those you can text, email, ask a question in the blog comments at the bottom too.

I will focus on #4 and #5
These skill are not a 5th grade component but if you forgot it, you lost it, so it is my job to teach, reteach, keep it fresh and keep you up to speed.

So here we go:  #4
This is not something I taught directly but knew from our NWEA scores that we have a weak area in Geometry so I will spend some time going over some things to get you up to speed.

Your objective is to be able to say how many FACES your object will have if you put a PYRAMID on top of a CUBE.
You know me seeing is believing so take a look at the images I created below.

In this image, I drew a cube and a pyramid as much to scale as I could.  If you were to put the pyramid on top of the cube.  How many faces would the new shape have?
Knowing what a face is would help.  👪 Ok.  Well simply put this emoji has 3 faces right?  Ok a face on a cube or any solid shape (3-D shape) has faces.  All you have to do is count the amount of sides of the solid shape.

Keep in mind once you put the pyramid on top of the cube.  The base (bottom) of the pyramid would no longer count, nor would the top of the cube.

See image below:

This may seem confusing because the bottom of the cube isn't visible to you at the moment, so why would that count?
Well, if you picked up the whole thing you would see the base again.  The pyramid and the cube are not a combined shape.

The cube originally has 6 faces.
The pyramid originally has 5 faces.
You would initially just think, oh ok, 11 faces, 5 + 6 but that would not be correct.

So if the top of the cube and the base of the pyramid no longer count,  how many faces does the shape above have now?

#5
How many feet are in 9 yards?
HINT: 3 feet = 1 yard
Inch (in.) (") a real world equivalent is the first knuckle of your finger to the tip of your finger.

Foot (ft.) (') a real world equivalent is about the length of your wrist to your elbow.
("Ha ha ha Mr. Lew has hairy arms man!")

Yard (yd.) a real world equivalent is about the length of your arms outstretched from wrist to wrist.

Keeping in mind real world equivalents from the pictures.
I drew an image to help you figure it out a little better.

SEE BELOW:
I made a line graph showing 9 yards in distance.
To the left I started to show you the equivalent that 3 feet equals 1 yard.
You should be able to take it from there.
This again is another example of drawing your thinking out to solve more complex problems.
The math has a way of just showing itself to you when you draw things out.
Finish the question on your own.

Want to make these shapes for yourself?!
I have to credit the idea to www.superteacherworksheets.com.  I use this website quite a bit to get ideas or post questions to practice.

Draw an 8 inch rectangle with each side of your square 2 inches in length.  Make sure your tabs are big enough.

Cut it out.
Fold on the lines
Tape or glue it together at the tabs.  For a better look and fit the tabs should go inside the box.

Pyramid?
Draw the base of the pyramid.  I went with 3 inch lines.
For the the triangle faces, I picked a half way point on each square edge and drew a 2 1/2 inch line straight out.  I just connected the triangle sides from there.
Take time and be sure your tabs are being put in the correct spots.

End of the day Review
This online school must be much easier huh?!
I only made it to the Do Now today.  It certainly takes more time, thought and planning bringing you video footage but it makes it more fun.

Y'all be well, stay safe, know that I love you and thinking about you.

I will try to get lessons up on our NEED skills tomorrow.
Had an online meeting with Ms. Brown and the teachers today so I had to cut planning for the blog short.
Have a great night.
See you tomorrow.

School From Home Session 6 Monday March 23rd

March 23rd
Update:
Just playing around on websites, emails, learning passwords and working on packets can quickly lose some luster after being stuck in the house all day.  I am currently working on how to tackle the day on the blog with some lessons.  As things in our lives change so quickly I have to go back and adjust to the situation given and teach in a different way.  I posted this on Friday:  I am not going to assign new content beyond Wednesday.  I would like time also to finish grades.  So this coming Thursday and Friday of next week will be a good chance to finish up any work and make up work.
You do have to get a hold of me somehow though to figure out what assignments to focus on.
Much of that will remain true, however,  I saw a drop off on blog attendance Thursday and Friday.  It has me wondering... are you overwhelmed? don't want to do it?  confused?  Whatever the case I am going to try to use this week to adjust and try to maintain support to you and your family in a different way.  This week I will try to incorporate audio and visual feeds to the blogs so what is in front of you will make more sense.

Please be patient, instead of making a new blog with assignments on it, I am working on how to make a video and audio accompaniment to the blog as if I were teaching in front of you.
Please stay tuned and try to update the blog now and then as I will be working on this throughout the day to make it more user friendly to you.

Be Well
Lew

Shout out:
To those of you starting to get into Google Classroom and those of you staying in contact with me.

Coming Up:
Hopefully you will actually see visual and audio feed to the the blog throughout the day.

Reminder:
All assignments are due Mar 27th.

Today's Assignments

HAVING A STRATEGY WHEN YOU ARE STUCK (NO MORE GUESSING!!!)
1) memory fact (remember a new one each day)

Ok. So. You had a fact to memorize per day over the week.  That means you could have memorized all of your 8s and turned this negative situation into a positive.

This is a picture of the memory facts I showed you on Session 1

The lesson here is have a strategy when you get stuck but ultimately you need to memorize this fact and keep it memorized.  Like you know your own name or your favorite color.  It needs to turn into something you really don't need to think about, but just be a thing you always just know.

So today we will focus on 3 x 8.

The video below will walk you through how to solve this math fact in a pinch while you are working on something challenging with many math steps you don't want to be bogged down with, "what is 3x8?"

Those of you that are working on memorizing, go ahead and challenge yourself on the website below but choose Times Tables and then choose x 8 and text me your score.

Some of you congratulations already have this mastered within 5 seconds or less.

END OF THE DAY NEWS:
In the world of technology, I still have much to learn.  Today's lesson is simple then.  From the previous blogs, I wanted you to work on something to master and get ye' ol' brain warmed up.
Memorize a math fact a day and/or challenge yourself to something from Hit The Button.
We will leave it at that today until I can get better acquainted with video uploading.

My current issue is I can load a video of me off of my computer with no problem like you saw today.
I can't however show you how to do work because everything comes at you backwards like looking at words in a mirror.  I could however use my cell phone for that.  So when I tried to upload the same idea just with the cell phone, loading length became a problem all of a sudden.  I will therefore cut it short today.  You have 4 days to text make up work.  Please be aware, the picture has to be something I can read.  Most of your work came in too hazy or blurry to read.

Be Well.

School From Home Session 5 Friday March 20th

Hello everyone,

Like at school, I try to use Fridays as a day to go over things, review and give some of you a time to get caught up.  Today will be no different.

I can see that yesterday there were not many blog views as there had been in days prior.  I haven't seen the work coming in as I expected either; so yes, today is a day to get caught up.  Look over the blogs from Monday-Thursday and get the work turned in as soon as you can.

The second round of the March Exact Path Madness continues so get your Learning Path time in.

Have a nice weekend.

The next blog post will take place on Monday.
Be Well

Since getting used to online learning takes time and patience.  I am not going to assign new content beyond Wednesday.  I would like time also to finish grades.  So this coming Thursday and Friday of next week will be a good chance to finish up any work and make up work.
You do have to get a hold of me somehow though to figure out what assignments to focus on.

I have to run errands this morning only the new math lesson has yet to be posted and will be after lunch.

Shout out:
To those of you starting to get into Google Classroom and those of you staying in contact with me.

10:00 NEW Skill
TODAY's LESSON
Quick Review:  We are focusing on real world measurements as we would use in the United States.
Our measurement system is much more confusing and hard to remember.
Today we will stay with volume.

Review:
1) Review Question:  Let's say you are putting a shelf on the wall.  You want the shelf to come out even and straight.  Would you use...
a) yards
b) miles
c) inches

2) Review Question:  3 lbs. is equal to  _________ oz.

3) Review Question:  Which is more 5 quarts or 18 cups?

I do: Part 1) which estimate is better...?
When we go to the gas station to fill up our fuel tank, which estimate makes more sense?

a) 12 cups
b) 12 Tablespoons
c) 12 gallons

The cost we pay is filling our fuel tanks up in gallons.

Volume Units:
teaspoon: (tsp) The smaller spoon on the far left
Tablespoon: (T) The larger of the two spoons
cup: (C) The white measuring cup next to the spoons
pint: (pt.) The bottle of green tea
quart: (qt.) The coffee creamer
gallon: (gal) The large jug of water

Conversions:
It takes 16 Tablespoons to make 1 cup.
It takes 2 cups to make a pint.
It takes 2 pints to make a quart.
It takes 4 quarts to make a gallon.
(Now do you miss the metric system?!)

Conversion in ounces:
1 tsp = 0.167 fluid oz.
1 T = 0.5 fluid oz.
1 c = 8 fluid oz.
1 pt = 16 fluid oz.
1 qt = 32 fluid oz.
1 gal = 128 fluid oz.

I do:
Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario
I am making pizza for lunch.  Today I cheated and just made a frozen pizza in the oven but my kids love it when we make pizza right on the grill.  For the pizza sauce we will need 1/2 cup of pizza sauce for each pizza.  All 4 family members will make their own pizza.  Which estimate is better for the amount of pizza sauces we will use?

We will use:
a) 16 ounces
b) 160 ounces
c) 1,600 ounces

1 cup is equal to 8 ounces.  If each pizza uses 1/2 cup of pizza sauce then each person is only going to use 4 ounces.  Since there are 4 of us and we each use 4 oz.  Sure sounds like multiplication of 4 oz. x 4 pizzas.
That makes 16 ounces of pizza sauce and therefore I choose a.

YOU DO/EXIT TICKET: SHOW YOUR WORK FOR PART 2, SEND PICTURE BY TEXT
5.MD.A.1 GOLD STAR EXIT TICKET (text your work when finished)

Part 1) Which estimate is better?
The time is coming soon where we will need to water the lawn.  What estimate would you most likely be best?

a) water in gallons
b) water in cups
c) water in pints

Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario.
You want to make iced tea for the family.  It will require 2 gallons of water and quite a lot of sugar and lemons.  How many ounces of water will you need to make iced tea?
Show Your Work.

Have a great day!
Check in with you tomorrow!

END OF THE DAY NEWS:
I see that a good amount of people are checking out the blog.  That's very encouraging.  What is not so encouraging is the amount of people turning in current work.  I know that more than half of the students in the class have a cell phone and can text.  I have reached out to everyone at least once.  Every student knows my phone number.  I have decided that the work that you turn in from the blog and Google Classroom this week and next week will be used to raise your grade from previous missing assignments that are similar in nature.

For example:  If you turn in a Do Now from the blog, the grade from that Do Now will count twice.  You will get credit for the work and I will raise a grade on a Do Now that wasn't turned in or had a grade that needed to be improved.
I commend those of you putting in the work.  Your efforts will help raise your grades.
Be Well
