School From Home Session 4 Thursday March 19th

March 19th
Update:
Since getting used to online learning takes time and patience.  I am not going to assign new content beyond Wednesday.  I would like time also to finish grades.  So this coming Thursday and Friday of next week will be a good chance to finish up any work and make up work.
You do have to get a hold of me somehow though to figure out what assignments to focus on.

I have to run errands this morning only the new math lesson has yet to be posted and will be after lunch.

Shout out:

Make Up Work?
Check in with me to make up assignments.

I spent a great deal of time getting this prepared on March 13th.
Google Classroom is now available to you. I will start to send me your student's emails, usernames and passwords.
Turning in work can still done via text but would be best by using Google Classroom.  All of the work will be found on this blog and in Google Classroom.  Use the blog first for information. Turn in the work on Google Classroom if possible.

10:00 NEW Skill
TODAY's LESSON
Quick Review:  We are focusing on real world measurements as we would use in the United States.
Our measurement system is much more confusing and hard to remember.
Today we will stay with volume.

Review:
1) Review Question:  Let's say you are putting a shelf on the wall.  You want the shelf to come out even and straight.  Would you use...
a) yards
b) miles
c) inches

2) Review Question:  3 lbs. is equal to  _________ oz.

3) Review Question:  Which is more 5 quarts or 18 cups?

I do: Part 1) which estimate is better...?
When we go to the gas station to fill up our fuel tank, which estimate makes more sense?

a) 12 cups
b) 12 Tablespoons
c) 12 gallons

The cost we pay is filling our fuel tanks up in gallons.

Volume Units:
teaspoon: (tsp) The smaller spoon on the far left
Tablespoon: (T) The larger of the two spoons
cup: (C) The white measuring cup next to the spoons
pint: (pt.) The bottle of green tea
quart: (qt.) The coffee creamer
gallon: (gal) The large jug of water

Conversions:
It takes 16 Tablespoons to make 1 cup.
It takes 2 cups to make a pint.
It takes 2 pints to make a quart.
It takes 4 quarts to make a gallon.
(Now do you miss the metric system?!)

Conversion in ounces:
1 tsp = 0.167 fluid oz.
1 T = 0.5 fluid oz.
1 c = 8 fluid oz.
1 pt = 16 fluid oz.
1 qt = 32 fluid oz.
1 gal = 128 fluid oz.

I do:
Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario
I am making pizza for lunch.  Today I cheated and just made a frozen pizza in the oven but my kids love it when we make pizza right on the grill.  For the pizza sauce we will need 1/2 cup of pizza sauce for each pizza.  All 4 family members will make their own pizza.  Which estimate is better for the amount of pizza sauces we will use?

We will use:
a) 16 ounces
b) 160 ounces
c) 1,600 ounces

1 cup is equal to 8 ounces.  If each pizza uses 1/2 cup of pizza sauce then each person is only going to use 4 ounces.  Since there are 4 of us and we each use 4 oz.  Sure sounds like multiplication of 4 oz. x 4 pizzas.
That makes 16 ounces of pizza sauce and therefore I choose a.

YOU DO/EXIT TICKET: SHOW YOUR WORK FOR PART 2, SEND PICTURE BY TEXT
5.MD.A.1 GOLD STAR EXIT TICKET (text your work when finished)

Part 1) Which estimate is better?
The time is coming soon where we will need to water the lawn.  What estimate would you most likely be best?

a) water in gallons
b) water in cups
c) water in pints

Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario.
You want to make iced tea for the family.  It will require 2 gallons of water and quite a lot of sugar and lemons.  How many ounces of water will you need to make iced tea?
Show Your Work.

Have a great day!
Check in with you tomorrow!

END OF THE DAY NEWS:
I see that a good amount of people are checking out the blog.  That's very encouraging.  What is not so encouraging is the amount of people turning in current work.  I know that more than half of the students in the class have a cell phone and can text.  I have reached out to everyone at least once.  Every student knows my phone number.  I have decided that the work that you turn in from the blog and Google Classroom this week and next week will be used to raise your grade from previous missing assignments that are similar in nature.

For example:  If you turn in a Do Now from the blog, the grade from that Do Now will count twice.  You will get credit for the work and I will raise a grade on a Do Now that wasn't turned in or had a grade that needed to be improved.
I commend those of you putting in the work.  Your efforts will help raise your grades.
Be Well

Mr. Lew
