Make Up Work?
Check in with me to make up assignments.

I spent a great deal of time getting this prepared on March 13th.
Google Classroom is not yet available to you until they send me your student's emails, usernames and passwords.
Turning in work is best done via text.  All of the work will be found on this blog.
Be Well
Lew

March 13th
With recent health concerns in our society, I am increasing the volume of blog posts and content.  For the time being, this blog will be set up to help my current students that will not be able to come to school for instruction for the next 3 weeks.  This blog will help students, parents, family members and anyone in the educational community looking for ways on how improve their craft or just get ideas for themselves.  Heck, you can even give yourself some validation by saying, "yeah, I already do that in my class!"  This is intended to be a support to you in whatever capacity I can offer.

Be Well and Enjoy!
Lew

Good morning; students, families and anyone interested moving forward,

I am using this state mandate to close schools, to simply move forward.  I will be walking through our school day as best as I can through digital format and will attempt to incorporate a podcast (voice) accompaniment to go along with this blog.  My wife and other folks will attest that I am not the best auditory learner.  For me seeing is believing, but I want to provide as many opportunities for everyone to maximize success.

Communication opportunities and logistics
1)Text
2)Class Dojo
3)Blog
4)Podcast (in the works)
5)Email
6)Google Classroom communication features
7)Moby Max Messenger feature

I will not post my phone number on the blog but you can get a hold of me via Class Dojo.  Everyone does know that I am not one bit shy about giving out my phone number to students, families, etc. and prefer text, 24/7.  I always tell my learning community, if I am awake at 3am and you text me in need of help, I will text you back with support.
We can communicate via text.  If a need is required I am willing to FaceTime if necessary to support you and your child to learn.
I made it known at the school that you can get my number and or email as long as you let them know what student and class you are calling for.

For those of you that went to the school to pick up a packet, I will be making a paper copy tomorrow of the 2 weeks of content.  All of the activities will be posted on this blog though.

Resources:
1) Me! Text Me!  School work can be sent and received via text and email.  Take a picture and send the work.  Work can be turned in online through many of these sources list below.
If you have a cell phone, you can communicate.
2) Don't have a computer?  Libraries can provide access.
Free Wifi can be found at a local McDonalds, coffee shop, public library etc.
3) I am not sure of distribution yet, but I am making hard copy packets today at the school

Begin downloading Google Classroom App on phones.  It will be somewhat limited on phone as opposed to a laptop or PC.

Make Up Work
Group of 5s Plan- I have a large amount of students failing right now simply because they choose not to fix incorrect work and turn it back in.  Most parents are being left in the dark by their children  about what their assignments are and what needs to be corrected to improve their grades.  It has really led to some awkward (for the student) or enlightening (for the parent) conversations on how to play catch up.
They (students) basically have put their heads in the sand and do not deal with the problem of simply... doing the work.  I never fail a student for trying even if every question is wrong.  I am however looking for growth from each student, each day, each subject and their efforts to try to learn it.

I will allow anyone at any time to fix and change the grade anytime on any assignment, quiz, test etc. up to the end of the marking period.  Students just need to put in the effort to communicate with you, me and get it done!  I will gladly change the grades because personal growth is always more important to me than a grade. Their willingness to demonstrate effort to improve always fuels my drive to help them that much more.

So... Turn in the 5 assignments that your student can fix and I will set up the next group of 5 assignments and continue this process until they are completely caught up.

Your child has until March 27th to fix their grades.  You will have access to anything you need around the clock until then.
Check in with me and I can let you know what 5 assignments you (student) or your child should work on and what the grade is currently on those assignments.  I can simply text you the work or whatever method I can use to get you the information.

Monday March 16
8:00 MASTERY SKILL good news, you don't HAVE to be up at 8am but you need to follow the program to be successful!  So make the time and don't get behind!
TAKE 10 MINUTES TO GET WARMED UP WITH THE MASTERY SKILL

Arrival and breakfast- You would be walking in the building from the bus, car, walking, biking, etc.  You would meet me at the door and I would ask you a fast fact question like: 8x4=?

Students and Parents,
Each student should know their 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, 9s (use 9s trick) 10s and 11s or have a way to solve these quickly.  Therefore, I don't waste time with flash cards.  Realistically, we only have 15 facts from the 100-some math facts from any 0-10 multiplication chart.
Please if you don't have all of your facts memorized, pick one fact per day to memorize.  Highlight the ones you can't solve in 5 seconds or less or have to use your fingers.
Keep track of the ones you don't know for yourself.

8:30 Exact Path Math
All students except for 3 of you (newer students) need to go on Exact Path and put in your 20 minutes on Learning Path.  My newer 3 will just supplement your learning path on MobyMax (Math) like you have been until we get that loaded for you.

Exact Path Math Assignment.  Nobody passed or completed that except one student, he wisely used the free assignment pass.  Be sure to go back and get that done.

All Students have access to the Math Assignment.  That is a 0 in the grade book until you fix/finish the grade.

9:00 Mar 16th Math Do Now

9:30 NEED Skill/Exit Ticket
Albion Group: You need to show mastery of 2x2 digit, 3x2 digit multiplication.  We discovered that Lattice Method worked best for you in class.  As long as you show your work I can see what you are thinking or where your coaching needs are.  You can of course use algorithm or partial products.
Remember you can use Khan Academy videos too as a supplement for instruction.

Battle Creek Group:  You need to show mastery of  the multiplication AND long division.  Thus far, I still see the algorithm as the best method for division.

Clio Group:  We are at a place with fractions where you can add, subtract, multiply and divide with different denominators.  You need to be able to reduce to lowest terms as well to show full mastery.

ALL WORK MUST BE SHOWN!
Albion Group:
1) 38 x 46=
2) 129 x 85=
3) 3.56 x 7.8=
4) 2.01 x 6.1

Battle Creek Group:
1) 146 / 3=
2) 129 / 5=
3) 3.56 / 7=
4) 2.01 / 6=

Clio Group:
1) 1/3 + 3/8 =
2) 6/7 - 3/8=
3) 1/5 * 2/9=
4) (3/4) / (2/3)=

10:00 Break Time- 10 minute break, bathroom break, brain break, Clash of Clans break😎

10:20 NEW Instruction- SEE GOLD STAR SKILL FOR NEW TASK
**Read carefully below.  This is new instruction so look it over and see the examples at the bottom.

According to our winter NWEA data, we found our class weaknesses were in Measurement and Data, Geometry and Fractions

Therefore, our NEW learning skill
for mastery is 5.MD.A.1
"5" meaning 5th grade
"MD" meaning measurement and data
"A.1" just means what strand we are focusing on in that category of math for that grade level.

5.MD.A.1
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

Lew's Crew Levels of Mastery- How I unpack this standard...
Blue Star- I can tell you the types of measurement we use most, what the basic tools are for those measurement types and what the basic units are in the metric system.
Example:
Type of measurement- Time
Type of tool used for this measurement- calendar
Type of unit associated with the measurement (what the numbers actually mean)- days, weeks, etc.

Green Star- I can tell you what metric unit and what tool would be best in a real world scenario.
Example:
If you wanted to know how much fence material to protect your property line, what tool would work best to measure the property line and what metric unit would you use?

Red Star- I can convert units in the metric system to another unit in the metric system.
Example:
If you I have 500ml of water to drink, what would that amount be in Liters?

Silver Star- I can use the measuring tools we would normally use in a real world scenario to solve for perimeter, area and volume of an object.
Example:
What is the volume of air inside the classroom?
*I don't ask students to memorize the mathematical formulas.  Show me the skills and the understanding of the concept.  Work must be shown though!

Gold Star- I can use these tools to convert American standard units of measurement also.  I am familiar with what the most common units are for distance, weight and volume.

NEW LESSON:
We left off our last class with the Gold Star skill.  Don't worry if you don't have the Silver Star to move up.
You can still earn the Gold Star and understand the concept in this lesson.

Prior knowledge: We have already learned how to convert numbers in base ten with exponents with * and /
Example:
3.56 * 10^4 power =35,600

We were later on able to use this knowledge to convert from something like km to cm.
35,600cm =.356km
Now, we continue our familiarity with the American side of measurements.
For the purposes of common knowledge, let's stick to what units and tools we commonly use.

Get familiar with this chart like we did with the metric system:
We will focus on the conversions.
Types of Measurement
Types of Tools
(from smallest to largest)
Units
(from smallest to largest)
Distance
(length, height and width)
Ruler
Yard Stick
Measuring Tape
Odometer
Inch
Foot
Yard
Mile
Weight
Scale
Ounces
Pounds
Tons
Volume
Measuring Spoons
(Teaspoon)
(Tablespoon)
Measuring Cups
Graduated Cylinder

Liquid ounces
Gallons
As I have said numerous times, the American system of measuring is not as easy or convenient is so many ways.

I will provide a conversion chart below so we can convert measurements in the American system.

We will use this chart to solve a few questions like we normally do.
5.MD.A.1 learning schedule for Gold Star
Each day we will: tell which estimate is better, make a conversion and solve real world problems

Monday we will focus on distance
Tuesday we will focus on weight
Wednesday we will focus on volume
Thursday we will mix and match
Friday we will wrap this up and exit ticket

TODAY's LESSON
I do:
Part 1) which estimate is better...?
I want to ride my bike from my house to the park at the other end of the township.  (unless you are in an airplane or on top of a hill, it is hard to see from end of a township to another)

What estimate is better?  a) 6 yards b) 6 miles
Miles are very large measurements like we studied kilometers in the metric system.
Yards are only about as long as your arms stretched out.

Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario
Since it will take about 6 miles to go from my house to the park at the other end of the township.
How many yards would I be travelling?

1 Mile=1,760 yards
I would multiply my amount of miles x the yards conversion

6 x 1,760= 10,560 yards
I would travel 10,560 on my bike to get to the park at the other end of the township.

YOU DO/EXIT TICKET: SHOW YOUR WORK FOR PART 2, SEND PICTURE BY TEXT
5.MD.A.1 GOLD STAR EXIT TICKET

Part 1) Which estimate is better?
My daughter wants to go to her friends house across the street.
What would be a better estimate?

a) 40 yards
b) 40 miles

Part 2) According to Google, It is 7.4 Miles from Pontiac to Waterford Township.
How far would that be in yards?

11:00 Go eat would ya'?!
