School From Home Session 2 Tuesday March 17th

March 17th Update:
Tip: To see previous posts click under the picture of my daughter feeding the birds to go to older stuff.

Tip:  I will be updating the blog daily.  I will be working on making it easier and more helpful for you to use from 9am - 2pm.  Hit the refresh key every now and then as I will be adding information during the day.

Tip: The times that show up in Red indicate what time we would be working on this in class.  Therefore when you see red, you know you have an assignment to do.
Things that show up in Green indicate the student's work.  Things in green should be worked on and turned in.

Notes from yesterday:
I haven't received any assignments yet via text or Dojo.  I know you want to sleep in like my kids are but remember this isn't a Snow Day scenario.  We are just working from home.  Make sure you are sending me assignments and use the time to get caught up.  Check in daily.
Be well
Lew

10:00 NEW Skill
TODAY's LESSON
Quick Review:  We are focusing on real world measurements as we would use in the United States.
Our measurement system is much more confusing and hard to remember.
So for our distance measurements we go in order from smallest to largest.

Inch (in.) (") a real world equivalent is the first knuckle of your finger to the tip of your finger.

Foot (ft.) (') a real world equivalent is about the length of your wrist to your elbow.
("Ha ha ha Mr. Lew has hairy arms man!")

Yard (yd.) a real world equivalent is about the length of your arms outstretched from wrist to wrist.
(Be nice, I haven't had coffee yet!  However, I can work with a hat on today and I have Lucky watching over me!) My wrist to about where my phone is taking the selfie is about a yard.

Mile (mi.) a real world equivalent would be walking from the school to other side of downtown Pontiac.
(This was taken at Oak Hill Cemetery while you were at Gym.)  This water way is the Clinton River.  For some reason urban developers thought it would be a neat idea to put the river underground instead of free flow through the city.  It would be about a mile from where I was standing to All Saints Church or Crofoot Elementary.

It takes 12 inches to make 1 foot.
It takes 3 feet to make 1 yard
It takes 1,760 yards to make a mile.

Review Question 1:  How many yards would it take to travel 2 miles?
Review Question 2: A football field is 100 yards, how many feet is that?
Review Question 3  How many inches is a football field?

For today we will switch our focus to weight.
I do:
Part 1) which estimate is better...?
A road construction company is concerned about how much weight can go over the bridge they just created.  Would they be better off estimating in pounds or tons?

a) pounds
b) tons

The basic units of weight in the United States are: (from smallest to largest)
Ounce (oz.) a common object that weighs an ounce would be a slice of toast.
Pound (lb.) a common object that weighs a pound would be a baseball or a shoe
Ton a fully grown bear weighs about a ton.

Let's get into the math with numbers part:
It takes 16 ounces to make a pound.
It takes 2000 pounds to make a ton.
(Do you miss the metric system yet?!)

So back to my question about the bridge... I think if heavy trucks, cars and other large equipment will cross the bridge, I would think tons would be the better answer considering large trucks and construction equipment will be heavier than a fully grown bear.  I also need to think that more than one truck will cross the bridge at a time so therefore, I say tons.

a) pounds
b) tons

I do:
Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario
As you know, I go to kickboxing class.  Unfortunately, the gym was shut down last night.  I will now have to get outside and do some running and weight lifting or watch videos online.  I do have 2 dumbbells in my office that weigh 20 pounds each.  How many ounce is that?

1 dumbbell is 20lbs.  it takes 16 ounces to make 1 pounds.  I am going to multiply 16 ounces x 20 pounds.

16 x 20= 320 ounces for 1 dumbbell

So another dumbbell would weigh 320 ounces

I will add 320 + 320 =640 ounces.
Therefore my dumbbells I use not only weigh 40 lbs combined, they also equal 640 oz. combined

Ok! Now it's your turn!

YOU DO/EXIT TICKET: SHOW YOUR WORK FOR PART 2, SEND PICTURE BY TEXT
5.MD.A.1 GOLD STAR EXIT TICKET (text your work when finished)

Part 1) Which estimate is better?

a) ounces
b) pounds
c) tons

Part 2) Make a conversion and solve a real world scenario.
As you saw earlier in the "I do" that I have 20 lb. dumbbells.  Well, my wife also has a pair of dumbbells that are 8 lbs. each.  How many ounces would they weigh if you measured both?
SHOW YOUR WORK...

Math is done for the day!

12:00 ELA, Science and Social Studies
Daily 5
1) Read to Self- Go on Exact Path and work on Learning Path for Reading.

2) Word Work-  If your word work for Day 1 is done turn in by sending over text or Class Dojo

Day 2 Work March 17th

List 2 and List 3 have words that end in -ed or -ing suffix

You are in search of words like your spelling words.  Remember you are not looking for your spelling words in a book.  You are finding the theme of your spelling words in other words like it.

You can either find a word from any book, magazine, etc. and find a word that has these or you can find a root word to add the -ed or -ing to it.

You need 15 words.

Be sure to include what book or source you used and what page you found the word on.

Your words are on Spelling City: http://www.spellingcity.com/users/Maddueces2  or you can go back to yesterday's post and see them there.

3)  Buddy Read- Use any book from Epic to read to your parent, brother, sister, auntie, granny, dog, turtle, whomever, whatever, read what you like for 20 minutes.
(Free Reading Sources) www.getepic.com (9am-5pm M-F) Class Code: 1vq1341

4) Hear Reading- You will hear reading when you log onto Moby Max for Science.
www.mobymax.com

5) Writing- We need to finish our writing pieces
You should have a completed writing assignment for the compare and contrast from Strawberry and Oranges.

Once we are able to type on Google Classroom, you can start sending me your completed writing pieces.

You can also ask a parent to email me as well.
ocbirdguy@gmail.com
OR
elewandowski@ocamt.academy

Black History writing piece is also due at the end by of the marking period.
Send those when you are finished.

SCIENCE
Complete the second lesson on the Moby Max Science Module.
It shouldn't take long.
Remember you can go back in the table of contents slides and find the answers.

Have a great day!
Check in with you tomorrow!

Tip:  Even I got worn out of video games as a kid at some point.  Super Mario Bros. and Mike Tyson's Punch Out were VERY addictive, Trust Me!  Our family limits how much time we all spend on technology for leisure.   While spending more time at home, my girls are making quite a bit of artwork, my youngest did a you tube search on how to make cranes.
When I am not tinkering on this blog, I am currently figuring out a 1,000 piece puzzle.  Believe me, this is addictive too!
